After waiting in line to park and waiting in line to enter, it was nearly lunchtime before we were inside Magic Kingdom. In reality, we rolled out of bed at our 30-minutes-away backup hotel around 8 a.m., throwing on the first clothes we could find - except for my husband, who wore the same thing as the day before, because luggage - opting for a breakfast of airplane peanuts (thanks, Southwest!) inside the roach-mobile as we made our way to Walt Disney World. In my original plan for our day at Disney, we would wake up at dawn, savor some Mickey-shaped waffles in our matching Mickey T-shirts and still leave in time to join our well-caffeinated brethren at the front of the line before the gates opened to Magic Kingdom.

But circumstances being what they were, we decided to make a spontaneous family vacation out of it, purchasing one-day park hopper tickets to squeeze in a day at Disney World before the cheer competition got underway. Most people start planning their visits at least six months in advance. As first-time cheer parents, Disney World really wasn’t on our radar until the Dawgs qualified for nationals just two weeks earlier.Īs anyone will tell you, last-minute trips to Disney World are typically not advised. My husband and I and our three kids, ages 9, 6 and 5, were in Orlando in December because our oldest daughter, KoKo, and her Austin-based cheer team were competing in the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships. Somebody stick propellers on our hats and alert the Disney authorities: Tweedledee and Tweedledum had arrived. My husband and I were not off to a magical beginning.Īnd I had arrived at our sold-out hotel at midnight to learn that I, someone who purports herself as travel expert, had booked our stay for the wrong dates.
